The D7 Visa is a visa for obtaining residence, valid for a period of 120 days, for two entries in the national territory. During this period, the visa holder must apply for a residence permit before the Immigration Service.
The process must start before the Portuguese Consulate or VFS Global (official partner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Portugal) in the applicant’s country of origin or legal residence. The request can be made by any foreign citizen who has passive income at their disposal. According to the law, the following income is eligible: retirement, pensions, income from movable or immovable property, royalties from intellectual property or income from financial investments.
In addition to the previous requirement, proof of means of subsistence for a period of 1 year, calculated from the value of the minimum wage in Portugal (currently € 665.00), must also be proven. This amount will be multiplied by 12 months and, when applicable, 50% or 30% of the total amount must be added, in case of adult relatives or dependent children, young people and older children, respectively.
As previously mentioned, after entering national territory, the holder of the D7 Visa must apply for their residence permit before the Immigration Service. This will be valid for 2 years, renewable for 3 years. During the period of validity of the permit, the possibility of absence from the country is limited, which cannot reach 6 consecutive months or 8 interpolated months. Failure to comply with this minimum stay requirement may result in the cancellation of the residence permit.
